A dashboard showing an average response time of 300 milliseconds can still hide thousands of users waiting five seconds. Averages flatten the tail, and the tail is where frustration lives. Percentiles such as p50, p95, and p99 describe the experience of different slices of traffic. p50 is the typical request, while p99 shows the slowest one percent. If p50 stays steady but p99 climbs, something is affecting a subset of requests: a cold cache, a hot shard, a slow dependency, or occasional garbage collection pauses. Track these percentiles over time and compare them with error rates and throughput. A healthy system can have rising throughput while its tail latency quietly degrades. Which percentile do you watch first, and what story does it tell in your environment?
